A holistic lifestyle generally focuses on your overall well-being. It provides you with long-term improvement in various aspects of your life and also general good health. Therefore, contrary to popular belief, a holistic lifestyle is not just about spiritual enlightenment, as I have clearly explained in the previous post on “what is holistic living?”, which you can revisit for a better context.
If you have ever experienced burnout (i.e. a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged and excessive stress),then you will understand why this lifestyle should matter to you and why you should explore it; remember this, you’ve got nothing to lose. Holistic lifestyle can impact your relationships, your health, it can make you more appreciative, grateful, understanding, considerate and loving.
However, it isn’t like I have attained a perfect holistic lifestyle already, but just like you, per necessity and curiosity, I’m learning to understand what this lifestyle entails, and what benefits I can get from living it out. If you continue with me on this journey, you will eventually come to understand why I chose to explore this path. Until then, here are five benefits that this lifestyle can provide us.
1. It promotes a lifelong positive habit
It is commonplace that prolong and excessive stress decreases the quality of life by decreasing an individual’s longevity. This chronic stress can come from different areas of our lives, it could be as a result of a high-pressure job, financial difficulties, challenging relationships, among other causes. Through a holistic lifestyle you are able to create a balance in your life and by so doing, decrease the amount of stress you expose yourself to and you also get to adopt positive habits, which will be instrumental in creating the balance you need and the discipline to stick to those positive habits for a lifelong impact.
2. It improves your physical, mental and spiritual health
As earlier discussed, a holistic lifestyle focuses on your overall health rather than just a part of an aspect of you. Studies show that sometimes, the origin of some physical health problems, have their roots from the mind (mental). So rather than just focusing on the physical symptoms and various signs of a disease, you get to address the root cause. However, because a holistic lifestyle focuses on creating a balance between your body, mind, and soul, it greatly contributes to overall good health. It is accurate to say that a holistic lifestyle can prevent you from getting sick. A Holistic lifestyle helps you make the right choices for yourself, it trains you to also be responsible for your overall wellbeing.
3. It increases your awareness about the world around you
For you to have a positive outlook on life, you will need to be aware of the world that you live in. You become the best version of yourself and will adopt the practice of gratitude when you live with the awareness of the world around you. It opens your mind and eyes to the things you already have and that way you don’t obsess or get preoccupied with getting those things that you don’t already have, but you will rather be first of all grateful for the things you have and enjoy, that way you will learn to only pursue things with meaning or that are relevant to you. Most importantly awareness of your world helps you to also appreciate the people in your life and also your relationships.
4. You develop a balance in your life
The goal of a holistic lifestyle is to help you find balance in your life, that way you become the best version of yourself. Whatever goals and plans that you have in your life, understand that without a holistic approach towards pursuing those goals, while you may seem to be attaining those goals and plans, one or all of your person (body, mind, or soul), will suffer. Nothing is worth such sacrifice believe me, because at the end of it all, you will undoubtedly be left with regrets and you might resent yourself for doing or not doing one thing or the other. Don’t allow the balance to be anything but a cliché to you, embrace it now through a holistic lifestyle and you will thank yourself later.
5. It enhances your effectiveness and efficiency
Effectiveness and efficiency are a sure prerequisite in achieving goals and set targets, but you can rarely have either of them in an imbalanced life. A balanced-life is directly proportional to an effective and efficient one. Therefore, as you embrace a holistic lifestyle, it helps in increasing your capacity to get things done without causing any harm to a part of your whole person. We will see in the latter part of this series, how we can practice this lifestyle in our day to day lives.
